Liquid Lunch – Let’s Go to Boot Camp
Trust me when I say, this isn’t what basic training is today. It’s a slight bit milder than this. Although in the Drill Instructor’s eyes, you are still worthless until he deems you a Soldier or Marine.
Needless to say, some athletes have also went through the same experience that I went through. The same experience Ufford went through. Many have come before us, and others will come after us.
Today, I’m going to show you patrons, until Wednesday, one famous veteran in our consciousness. Today, I present the pride of the United States Naval Academy, Roger Staubach.

Roger Staubach was a midshipman who went on to become one of the more legendary quarterbacks of the NFL. Roger was known for his toughness on the field. His hands are now mangled from years of the NFL. However, the NFL was nothing compared to his four years as a Naval Officer during the Vietnam War Era.
He could have requested to stay in the US, but he chose to serve over a year as a supply officer in Vietnam. Afterwards, he was kept in the US until his discharge in 1969. He was also the last cadet/midshipman to have received the Heisman Trophy.
His military career wasn’t impressive, mind you. But the fact that he chose to honor it before the fame of the NFL was unique for the time.
So, considering this is an open thread. If you’ve got loved ones or friends in the military, pull up a seat and raise a drink for them. This is their week.
