Sorry folks, after a long week, this is what I’m looking forward to seeing. It’s 8pm, I’ve seen no sign of Last Call – if the Rookies put up a post, a link will get added. Check out their Final Four sleeper article if nothing else! For now, I’m getting ready for a birthday party. Let’s get some tunes going in here (by the way – this band is awesome and y’all should listen to them and get their album. kthx) Thanks for stopping by this week, I’m putting up a baseball salary cap article on Monday, from a  more legal perspective (The first Phoenix Pub article with pin cites!) . This weekend we’ll have the usual suspects giving you your laughs, your open threads, and some good times. Cheers.

UPDATE – the Rookies are asking, in their Last Call post, to be removed from the Last Call rotation/crew.  So feel free to party here tonight folks. We’ll come up with a new rotation soon.

  • Sorry, gang. I literally just walked through the door 5 minutes ago. I left a message with JB, which apparently he didn’t get. Oh well. I was out celebrating landing a contract – which means I’ll actually get PAID for my work!!!

And FD, thanks for seeing the lack of a post and tossing something up there. I owe you one of those drinks, pal.

  • Oh, and the link to the Rookies – http://www.therookiesblog.com/2009/11/13/last-call-closing-time-part-two/

I’ll be hanging around, as usual, if anyone has questions or needs directions.

  • dave

@Sculptor?!?: Do they want you to make anything specific or just whatever comes out of that twisted brain of yours?

  • Rob in WI

The important question is, will I get a chance for rebuttal on any “pro salary cap” nonsense that comes to the forefront.

    Grrrrr…. getting angry now….

  • dave

@Sculptor?!?: Oh I see. well best of luck to you.

  • Ain’t no party like a last call party.. What what.

  • dave

@Sculptor?!?: I am not disappointed. I am happy for you. Just a crappy week and craptastic night.

  • So, given the events of tonight, should we have a bit of a pow-wow about LC rotation via email?

Oh, and Bev, proud of you. Well done!

  • And thanks for all the props, gang. It means a lot, actually.

  • Rob in WI

@Sculptor?!?: in the post aboce, FD hinted at an upcoming post about a salary cap in baseball.

I am opposed to anything resembling a salary cap.

    RABBLERABBLERABBLE

    Harumph harumph harumph.

  • So, how about that local sports team. Luckily my team didn’t play tonight, so I didn’t have to worry about them choking on dick, though having experience with some of them, they’re likely half black out drunk right now. And Hemsky’s probably trying to convince a 16 year old to stay out past her curfew and “play with his stick.”

  • dave

@Sculptor?!?, I think I am going to kill the burger clown twitter, not a much fun as I thought it would be.

  • dave

@Rob in WI: Are you concerned that a Salary cap would do away with the Sausage race at Brewer games?

    • Oh, heavens no! We can’t have that! I’d sooner do away with Bernie sliding into the giant beer stein. Oh, wait…

    • Rob in WI

Always remember, I’m a Cubs fan. I couldn’t care less if the Brewers ran out of money, sausages, or different ways to fuck up a roof.

But mostly, I hate whiny, greedy owners. And they are the only people who win if there’s a salary cap in beisbol.

      • Interesting point.
But frankly, I’m so sick of the exorbitant salaries and profits, it all makes me ill.

        • Rob in WI

That’s the trick. A salary cap doesn’t lower the ridiculous salaries, it just rearranges the medium salaries.

Guess what, ticket prices aren’t going down either. In fact, a stronger arguement is that ticket prices will increase in all markets.

Increased income + lower costs = more money in owners pockets.

  • Okay, i know there aren’t many folks here, so you’re likely to see this question repeated about the weekend and perhaps into next week, but do you lot want the sports schedule? Do any of you use it? Is it worth my time, or should I bag it? Be honest – I’ve no problems continuing it if you want it, but I could just as easily not do it too.

    Fire away….

  • dave

@Rob in WI: then maybe the answer is too make the luxury tax more. Say you spend $250 million. Then you should be taxed at 35% and that money distributed to smalled market teams, but then the caveat is that the smaller teams need to use that money on players, so it does not go into their pocket. Because if I was a major market team the last thing I would want to do is give money to a team like the Royals.

    • Rob in WI

And then we get to the other connundrum. Using the Brewers as an example, they took the tax money they got, and rather then spend it on players (and shitty free agents, etc) spent it on developing younger talent: jj hardy, corey hart, carlos villanueva as examples.

I’m all for the luxury tax. but let’s cut the charade that its about “big market teams” and just admit its about the Yankees.

Oh. BTW, MLB needs the Yankees more than the Yankees need MLB.

      • dave

But it’s not just the Yankees, the Sox spend a ton, so did the Dodgers and the Angels.

        • Rob in WI

Yes, but nobody cares about what the LA teams spend, because the owners play ball (being newer owners under Herr Buds regime).

The Sox get lumped in with the Yanks, but there’s always a team atop the list.

          • dave

Don’t get me wrong I have no problem with teams spending money to get the best players. It’s a business and in business you want the best guys working for you. But if a team like the Royals spent as much as Boston to get the same players, could the people in Kansas City afford to go to those games. Probably not and the team would eventually fold.

            • of course, you could argue that if teams like KC or Cleveland had been able to compete all along, and were able to score lucrative tv and marketing deals like Boston or NY to be able to pay for those high ticket players, then perhaps fans could afford to go. nothing’s as cheap as it used to be anyhow.

  • Okay, so for those of you who have been waiting, The Philadelphia Union have released their kit today. Fuse has a little post on it. Go have a look, and leave your sartorial opinion. I have already left min…. http://avoidingthedrop.com/2009/11/13/its-here-officially/

    • Chicago Sometimes

I agree w/ Dave — for over a hundred clams for a rep (and I guess nowadays that’s like fifty thousand bloody pounds or some shit) that thing better come w/ a seriously supersized side of fries.

  • Chicago Sometimes

Hey there Sculptress and her gang of kiln fuckers! Congrats on the news.

I’m worried about the Rooks guys, they got a good group of budding writers over there (even if they do have that if-you’re-over-25-go-directly-to-tar-pit nonsense — probably because I’m days away from, um, 26) and I hope they don’t fade away.

Anyways, Reinsdorf, apparently a regular, came in the shop again today. Forget having a salary cap, let’s just say someone should make this cat have some celery!

    /ha amirite folks?!?!?
//hey that’s funny did the floor just open up right belo —
    ///yaaaaaaaahhhh

    • I have no idea what’s going on over there. All I know is what I discovered this evening after going out to dinner.

But we’re always interested in adding good writers to the roll call – you got anything to say on a regular basis?

      Oh, and thanks! Woo!

      • Chicago Sometimes

All due respect but did you not just see me make a salary/celery pun up there ??? I should be a yoga instructor, that shit was such a stretch. Hell I damn near banned my own self for that nonsense.

/cubs suck tigers suck twinkies suuuuuuuck
        //cutler too fuck him
        ///end of witty commentary
////seriously i’d love to but i’d just wind up embarrassing myself and my family

        • i saw it. i was so horrible i thought it was best left in peace, lest it come back to life, zombie style and attempt to eat someone.

          • Chicago Sometimes

            HAHAHA that’s funny.

The only way that could’ve been worse is if Stephanie Meyer wrote it…

            /hmm needs more gayass glitter
            //BANNED

  • @Rob – I’m actually personally not a huge cap fan, but legally I think they have an obligation. You’ll see what I mean…

@Sculptor – Break is coming up soon. I will gladly take one of those beverages.
