One of America's Olympic hopefuls - Allison Baver

I’m a bit late this morning, so please accept my apologies.  Been a busy morning so far.  Let’s get to it, shall we?  Good.

  • Just two games in the NBA last night and your winners were Cleveland and Portland.  LeBron dropped 36-7-8 in just forty minutes of work last night.  I shudder to think what the Cavs would look like next season without the young man.
  • It was a busy night on the ice, though, and your winners there were Les Habitants (!!!), Washington, Columbus, Ottawa, Tampa Bay, San Jose, Nashville, Minnesota and Los Angeles.  Ilya Kovalchuk was moved from Atlanta to New Jersey last night and will debut against the Maple Leafs tonight in East Rutherford.  I know I can’t wait.
  • In top 25 men’s hoops action, your winners were #7 Purdue, #9 Duke (over #19 Georgia Tech), #13 Gonzaga, #14 LSU and #15 Butler.  It was a busy night on the ladies side (AW YEAH IT WAS) and your winners there were #2 Stanford, #5 Tennessee, #9 Ohio State, #14 Georgia (over #21 LSU), #18 Kentucky and #22 Vanderbilt.  In upsets, #6 Duke, #15 North Carolina and #20 UW-Green Bay went down to unranked foes.  FIX YO SQUAD, LADIES.
  • Ahead of the Archie Manning Bowl on Sunday, Jason LaCanfora offers up some sobering truth on the labour front.  It’s not pretty, kids.  Good news for disenfranchised Vikings fans though, the Migraine Kid was named Pepsi Rookie of the Year.
  • Michael Irvin is being sued for supposedly raping a woman two years ago.  Irvin’s lawyer says it’s a trumped attempt to extort money, essentially.  Either way, I’m hardly even disgusted by stuff like this anymore.  I’m just numb to it.
  • The cover of the new Sports Illustrated with American Olympic skiier Lindsey Vonn is apparently too sexy for some puritans.  She’s fully clothed and in a skiing pose.  BONER TIME.
  • They woke up Roger Daltrey and Peter Townshend long enough yesterday to have a presser ahead of Sunday’s performance.  Now it’s time for rice pudding with raisins in it and a bath before bedtime.
  • Everyone is really thinking this Comcast-NBC merger might be something to take a look at.  I’d say so.  A network that can’t get out of it’s own way, and a cable company hell-bent on world domination and with no feeling at all towards it’s customers.  Can’t wait.
  • Bill Simmons’ favourite basketball coach was either turfed out or resigned yesterday, depending on which reports you see.  Shame about Blake Griffin, really, but the West is so tough this year it might have been difficult for them to make the playoffs even with him.
  • Awesome news, Browns fans.  Your new GM is “impressed” with St. Timothy the Brave.  YAY!  But bad news for Broncos fans.  Brandon Marshall is a goddam lunatic.  Seriously.
  • If I told you that a 13 year old kid had made a “verbal committment” to a university to play football and asked you to guess who might have had something to do with it, would Kiffykins name be the first one out of your mouth?  I bet it would.
  • Donovan McNabb said that Mike Vick deserves a shot to start somewhere else, which is translated into “I’ve had enough of this Wildcat nonsense and I want him gone.”  I think Mike Vick deserves a shot too.  Can we get Plaxico out of jail for a few days?
  • We may see TiWoo on the course in February.  When he gets back to banging porn stars is anyone’s guess.
  • UFC 109 is tomorrow night and it features ancient gladiators Mark Coleman and Randy Couture in the main event.  Coleman is 46 and Couture is 45.  The loser will exit in a wheelchair.

Okay, that’s it.  Enjoy your Fridays and be careful if you’re on the East Coast if you’re out tonight.  Sounds like this upcoming snow event is going to be a bit ridiculous.  For the rest of you, enjoy it, enjoy the weekend, enjoy the Super Bowl and all the surrounding hoopla.  If I were a betting man, I’d stick with my original choices which are take the Colts and give the points, and I have a sneaking suspicion it might go under.  Bye y’all.

  • Wow. So much fun in one update, I don’t know where to start….
Okay, I’ll take the bait. How much do you love me, boys and girls? Because if the Browns sign Jesus Tebow, I’m going to be asking for someone to kill me. If one of you loves me enough, you’ll put me out of my misery. How about it – TY? Fuse? Anyone?

  • Pam

I was stunned when I found out about that trade. It sounds like something I would make fun of the Rangers for. The worst part about it is that they couldn’t at least unload Mike Mottau too. (I know, no one would want him!)

    • Pam, I was thinking that if the Rangers made this trade you would be killing me today! Why give up Oduya, Im a ranger fan and would kill to have him on my team. So much salary – and a first round pick!

      • Pam

I like Oduya. I’m surprised that the Thrashers wanted him, since he’s not having a good year. I’m surprised they didn’t want Greene instead. Of course I’m glad too, because I have a major crush on Greene. Bergfors, well, whatever. He ended up in Jacques’ doghouse, which is probably why he got sent away. Cormier, I had high hopes for. Of course he has that ugly stain from that elbow incident, so at least I don’t have to hear about how terrible my team is for letting him play professional hockey. And that first rounder, well I really hope that turns out be #30 overall, but I know that’s not happening. Regardless, it will be a low first rounder.

It’s weird because I felt like that was a lot, and everyone and their brother is crucifying the Thrashers saying they didn’t get enough. WTF?

As my good friends, the Ookies of IPB put it:

We hate to say this, but someone has to: the Devils have become utterly predictable over the last few years. We know, this too is shocking. So while we loathe, with every fiber in our beings, the notion of giving up anything more than, like, fourth-round picks for rental players, we have to admit that this trade is at least something unexpected. So instead of seeing the same old fucking shit every night from the Devils until April, now we’ll get to see, at worst, some new fucking shit!

    • Yeah, I’m a bit confused about it too. I think it’s an inequitable trade – and they got the better end of it.

  • semper_ubi_sub_ubi

@Pam: Look at the trades the Leafs made – Phaneuf was not playing well in Calgary, but they only thing they got themselves was cap flexibility if they don’t resign the players they got with the expiring contracts.

  • Okay, so we like talking about hockey and Tebow. Good to know!

    SNOWPOCALYPSE NOW

True, European soccer should be a topic at the moment right now as well, as this is a surprisingly entertaining season in many of the leagues (I usually find it a dull period until Champions League picks up again).

      • It’s been a good festive period, there really have been some fine games. It seems like forever since the Champions League R16 draw was made, I’m going to have to look up the matchups again because I can’t remember them other than Arsenal/Porto and United/Milan.
